Digital Hearing Aids and Styles
Behind the ear (BTE) Hearing Aids: There are two types of behind the ear styles. There is a traditional BTE that is larger and flows sound down a tube into the ear canal. The “RIC” or Receiver-In-the-Canal style has become the new standard in hearing devices due to their flexibility and improved patient satisfaction. The RIC design allows for a much smaller casing and better comfort and sound quality as the sound is presented directly in the ear canal of the user.
In the ear (ITE) Hearing Aids: There are many different sizes of ITE hearing devices. These products are custom fit from an impression of the patient’s ear canal and used less frequently as they are most appropriate for a specific type or configuration of hearing loss.
Invisible in the ear(IIC) Hearing Aids: The IIC hearing devices are the smallest hearing aids available on the market. These small custom-made devices fit deep it the ear canal only a few millimeters from the ear drum and take advantage of the ear’s natural ability to collect and focus on sounds. These devices are not appropriate for all patients depending on their severity of hearing loss and ear canal size.
CROS and BICROS Hearing Aids: Contralateral routing of signal (CROS) amplification systems are intended to be used when the brain is unable to process sound from one side. CROS hearing aids might be recommended for single-sided deafness (SSD) or for people with very poor word recognition on one side. BiCROS (bilateral microphones with contralateral routing of signal) amplification systems are recommended when the “good’ ear has hearing loss as well.
